Elaine Moore: Screening Saved My Life

In 1993, Elaine Moore thought she was healthier than she'd ever been. So she didn't worry when she noticed a change in her bowel habits. When her doctor scheduled her for a sigmoidoscopy - one of the screening tests for colorectal cancer - Moore was shocked by the results.

"I had a tumor the size of a walnut. The diagnosis was advanced colorectal cancer." She was 54 at the time.

Elaine Moore considers herself fortunate to be a colorectal cancer survivor. After undergoing surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, she has been symptom-free for the past eight years.

"People tell me they are squeamish about having a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. The alternatives - cancer that goes undiagnosed or treatment that can include surgery, radiation, and chemo - are much worse. Everyone should get the screenings as recommended. Screening saved my life."
